Molecular weight correlates directly with the material's impact toughness and wear resistance. When molecular weight exceeds 3.0 million g/mol, the polymer chains entangle more effectively, improving the material's wear life and crack propagation limits. For high-abrasion applications like mine truck linings and bunker chutes, a grade with 5.0 to 9.0 million g/mol is recommended.
UHMW-PE is highly hydrophobic and chemically inert, meaning standard solvent adhesives and glues will not bond to its surface. For assembly, mechanical fastening (such as counter-sunk bolts or weld washers) is the industry standard. Extrusion welding using specialized PE rod is possible, though it requires precise temperature control to avoid thermal degradation.
Like most thermoplastics, UHMW-PE has a relatively high coefficient of linear thermal expansion (approx. 1.5-2.0 x 10^-4 m/m/°C). When designing large installations, slotting the mounting holes is crucial to allow the sheets to expand and contract with temperature shifts without buckling or pulling through fasteners.
The designation numbers correspond directly to molecular density classes. PE-1000 is premium UHMW-PE (3M+ g/mol) offering maximum wear life. PE-500 is high-molecular-weight polyethylene (HMW-PE, ~0.5M g/mol) providing a balanced option for light mechanical use. PE-300 is standard High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), which is easy to weld and ideal for structural chemical tanks but offers lower wear resistance.
